A True Party Man: The Selling Point for Babajide Sanwo-Olu

APC endorses Sanwo-Olu as the new flag bearer for the 2019 gubernatorial election in Lagos State. This is unbelievable to many in Nigeria because of the peculiarity of Lagos politics over the years. But the question remains that his emergence is in whose interest? The Lagosian in general or the party members. The 53 years old Babajide Sanwo-Olu is making history as a challenger disallowing the incumbent governor Akinwumi Ambode from his second term.

Your asset and your liability in politics.

The most important asset or currency in politics is the people and also your liability. They can lift you up and also bring you down. When you are too firm with them, they say you too wicked and when you are lenient with them, they say you are too weak but where is the balance? Life is about people but people have different songs for the day; “Hosanna today; Crucify him tomorrow” Nothing last forever except the grace of God.

The eople or the politics.

If you ask an ordinary Lagosian about Gov. Akinwumi Ambode, you are likely to get a thumbs up for him. Can he get the same reaction from the principalities and powers in politics, your guess is as good as mine? Then the next question is why? Is there anything the leaders of APC see that the generality of free, non-partisan Lagosian cannot see? One thing is certain which was from the harrow head of APC, The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, that Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode did well in office but not a good party man”

Is Sanwo-olu new in Lagos politics?

Babajide Sanwo-olu is certainly not new in Lagos politics, he was in 2003 appointed as Special Adviser on Corporate Matters by the then Deputy Governor, Femi Pedro, and 2007 as commissioner for Commerce and Industry by the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Administration, later in 2007 served as commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions by Gov Babatunde Raji Fashola.

The results of the primary.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu drove his victory home at the end of the party primary election with amazing votes 970,851 while the incumbent Gov Akinwunmi Ambode, scored 72,901 votes. Therefore, Babajide Sanwo-Olu popularly called “Sanwo Eko” was declared winner of the Primary of All Progressives Congress APC election.”

What can we learn?

The new selling point for Sanwo-Olu is that he is a true party man. This may be a clue or a lesson for the people in high places that as politicians, you must not forget your source whether the people in general or at least some people. Although some people are even more important than the generality of the people whether rightly or wrongly but you should know. Again, life is full of times and seasons; a time to be born and a time to die; time to play firm and time to reconcile; time to sow and time to reap. You must strike a balance between a performer in the eyes of the populace and being a true party man. So, neither “I belong to nobody” will work because you actually belong to some principalities nor “I belong to everybody” because you actually belong to some powers. These people may have good reason to hire you or bad reason to retain you or no reason to dump you. Do not be fooled by the praise of men today, when the going gets tough tomorrow; you may not see anybody again.
